Happening in autumn, Nancy Jazz Pulsation has become one of the major musical events of the season in Lorraine.
A LITTLE HISTORY
The first festival was in 1973, an ambitious challenge launched by a handful of young locals who wanted to structure a major jazz event in Lorraine. The festival pioneered presenting daring avant-garde jazz and quickly gained acclaim for its eclectic programming. Concerts are presented throughout the region and by maintaining affordable rates it reached status as a popular event which attracts 100 000 for the fall festival.

The spare, emotive Sunyata harks back to early Buddhist writings to push at the limits of today’s creative music. Forward-thinking violinist/composer Renée Baker finds inspiration in the earliest Buddhist writings to reach Tibet, Padma Sambhava’sBook of the Dead (The Bardo). Sambhava playfully hid his writings in unusual and remote locations, believing that people would recover them at a time when his spiritual messages would have the most beneficial impact. Baker engages his writings with the same belief.
For her first MCA commission, Baker entwines music, voice, and dance. She has written a lush, energetic score for her own magnetic Chicago Modern Orchestra Project as well as four deeply affecting vocalists: Dee Alexander, Ann Ward, Saalik Ziyad, and Taalib-din Ziyad, members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. As they stand on pedestals in luminescent clothing, the singers serve as a visually potent bridge between Sambhava’s transcendent text and a protean dance Baker is conceiving for a soloist.
Sunyata: Towards Absolute Emptiness is presented as part of MCA’s Creative Music Summit in recognition of creative musicians/composers, and in conjunction with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), This year Creative Music Summit features Baker and Nicole Mitchell in two distinctive concerts which journey through the multiple dimensions of inner and outer spaces.

Don’t miss this celebration of the special musical connection between New Orleans and Chicago! There is no more swaggering a genius of New Orleans piano than Henry Butler, who lives and breathes the piquant melodies, two-fisted rhythms and awesome stylistic reach of Louisiana legend Professor Longhair. Steven Bernstein has fully absorbed the exuberant sound of the melting-pot quality of New Orleans tradition, while also specializing in funk, klezmer and avant jazz.
Dee Alexander, a brilliant Chicago vocalist who is gaining worldwide attention, makes her SCP Jazz series debut as the show’s opener.

THREE ELLAS
Dee Alexander, Spider Saloff & Frieda Lee
Three of Chicago’s premiere vocalists pay tribute to the genius of Ella Fitzgerald. Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune says “jazz singing is a profoundly sensual art, at least when Dee Alexander, Frieda Lee and Spider Saloff are standing before the microphones.” And Chicagoist writes, “Separately, each of these ladies has her own distinct voice, but together, they embody the heart-turning passion of the First Lady of Song, from her sensual, breathy tones to her pure, rich highs.”

About the concert series:
Nor quite the “jazz”, nor quite the “world music”, let alone their “fusion”, but meetings between different traditions and different futures, whether project-based universe reference composite guest artists or confrontations, equations musical and socio-musical with several unknowns. On the hybrid. The field of jazz music, after all, are they not predisposed, that they were among the first hybrid of modern times? And since that day, handling the paradox, they cease to be themselves when they stop producing new blends, new relationships – as soon as they cease to differ.
Hamid Drake & Michael Zerang & Dee Alexander
Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 18hThey are both famous drummers, great propagators of rhythms and swirls through the mirrors and the worlds of jazz and improvised music. But it’s still not enough to say: Hamid Drake is considered one of the best practitioners of frame drums, and he also excels at bata drum, or Iya, and on the tabla, dumbek or while darabukka have secrets for Michael Zerang. The African-American family has one of the Mississippi Valley and the other Assyrian family comes from the valley of the Tigris and Euphrates, but a man or a river to the other, the watershed line passes through the moon. Drake and Zerang have known each other forever and every year in Chicago and at dawn, for the winter solstice, they gather their percussion from North Africa, Western, Middle Eastern and Eastern India, and they play and juggle with miles rhythms to audiences morning.
For the first time in Paris before the summer solstice, they invited an old acquaintance, a mutant singer, who has as many bird songs, even imaginary, mostly imaginary, the two friends know the sound of drums : diva Dee Alexander.

Umbrella Music presents:
Immediate Sound Series
Immediate Sound, the Hideout’s series for jazz and improvised music, is curated by Umbrella Music founding member Mitch Cocanig. Beginning in April of 2006, the programming has taken place on each Wednesday night and focuses on presenting established local, domestic, and international musicians. These concerts represent the range of methods utilized by contemporary improvisers in their music, and give audiences a chance to hear them perform in an ideal environment with exceptional acoustics. Over the course of its first four years, the Immediate Sound Series has provided a stage for artists as wide ranging as Fred Anderson and Nicole Mitchell from the AACM, Joe McPhee, Taylor Ho Bynum and Joe Morris from the East Coast, and Peter Brötzmann, Ab Baars, Mats Gustafsson, PNL, and Terrie Ex from Europe; giving them all an integrated platform from which to present their ideas. In addition, each night features a DJ who spins sounds from different genres, to help put the live performances into the greater context of what music is all about – an exchange of creative thinking in sound.
Tim said… This is a residency that I have dreamed about for 10 years. The Immediate Sound Series brings guests from around town and around the world to the Hideout this Wednesday and every Wednesday forever.

Ramsey Lewis’s Proclamation of Hope
Featured vocalist Dee Alexander provides stirring soulful improvisations to accompany the orchestra.
Proclamation of Hope is a large scale, multi-media symphonic concert by jazz legend, pianist and composer Ramsey Lewis.
Pianist Ramsey Lewis
Bill Richert
Composer Pianist Ramsey Lewis leads the night’s performance as he unveils each of the concert’s eight original orchestral movements.
Almost 150 years after his untimely death, Abraham Lincoln is considered by many to be America’s greatest President, as much for his leadership during a time of crisis as for his eloquence and humanity. Among those artists who were inspired to pay tribute to Lincoln during his bicentennial year was Grammy-winning jazz legend, pianist and composer Ramsey Lewis. In the summer of 2009, Lewis premiered a new, large-scale, multi-media symphonic poem at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois, which had commissioned the work to commemorate Lincoln’s 200th birthday.
Now, public television audiences will have the opportunity to experience Lewis’ vision, as his profoundly moving work Proclamation of Hope comes to PBS. The work is scored for wind ensemble, rhythm section and voice and is organized in eight discrete movements. Visual images from a range of sources depict various historical moments and concepts, and are viewed as the group performs the composition.
“I not only hoped to inspire people to want to learn more about Abraham Lincoln, but to portray the gains of African Americans and our country while showing challenges yet to be overcome. I hope my audience will feel the inspiration that I felt composing this work as they listen to my music and watch the stirring images on screen.” — Ramsey Lewis

CHICAGO – March 15, 2011 – Almost 150 years after his untimely death, Abraham Lincoln is considered by many to be America’s greatest President, as much for his leadership during a time of crisis as for his eloquence and humanity. Among those artists who were inspired to pay tribute to Lincoln during his bicentennial year was Grammy-winning jazz legend, pianist and composer Ramsey Lewis. In the summer of 2009, Lewis premiered a new, large-scale, mixed-media symphonic poem at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois, which had commissioned the work as part of its celebration of the Lincoln bicentennial. Now, public television audiences will have the opportunity to experience Lewis’ vision, as his profoundly moving work PROCLAMATION OF HOPE comes to WTTW on Thursday, April 14 at 9:00 pm.
PROCLAMATION OF HOPE, taped this past November before an enthusiastic audience at the prestigious John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., was composed by Lewis and conducted and arranged by Scott Hall for a 22-piece orchestra — wind ensemble, rhythm section and voice. The work is organized in eight movements that draw upon jazz, gospel and blues. Each movement was inspired by an actual historical event from or impacted by Lincoln’s life and vision for America, and considers Lincoln’s profound and lasting influence on the United States’ quest to become “a more perfect Union.” The music is performed against visual designer Michael Coakes’ sweeping mixed-media tableau of historic images and photos. University of Pennsylvania music professor Guthrie P. Ramsey, author of Race Music: Black Cultures from Bebop to Hip-Hop, worked with Lewis to provide accompanying written notes.

About the Festival
The Tel Aviv Jazz Festival, in its 22nd year, is one of the most important jazz events in Israel.
The Festival has garnered a prestigious reputation in Israel and abroad, as a magnet for stellar jazz performers and a home for special projects. However, the Festival’s main attraction is the exciting experience it provides for jazz aficionados. This year, the Festival will host internationally known jazz musicians, who will play side-by-side with Israeli musicians, in original Festival productions and premiere performances.
Among the artists who will take part in this year’s festival are:
Dee Alexander, “Queen of Chicago” – the warm-voiced singer, who will perform pieces from her latest album, as well as a tribute to Nina Simone and Diana Washington.

From Ella to Mandela
The 55-piece Chicago Jazz Philharmonic returns to the Auditorium! From Ella to Mandela: A Celebration of the African and American Spirit presents both a musical exploration of the contributions of female vocalists to the jazz genre and a Nelson Mandela inspired suite, Hope in Action.
From Ella to Mandela will feature some of Chicago’s most celebrated jazz vocalists – Dee Alexander, Terisa Griffin, and Maggie Brown – paying tribute to the legacies of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, and Billie Holiday. The second half of the program is Hope in Action, composed in honor of Mandela’s 90th birthday celebration. This work seamlessly weaves jazz, classical and South African inspired melodies, interspersed with moments of inspirational oration taken from Mandela’s speeches. The work culminates with a grand chorus featuring Soul Children of Chicago. Also featured are celebrated Chicago saxophonists Ari Brown and Ernest Dawkins and special guest orator, actress T’keyah Crystal Keymah.
